What to Expect During Construction

When and Where?
Look under "Current Construction Activities" and "Ongoing Construction Activities" to see what construction activities will be happening in your area this year.
Utility Work
A variety of utilities (electric, cable, telephone, gas, water, sewer) are impacted by a major construction project such as the New 212. New utilities (such as electrical for lighting) will be installed for the new highway; old utility lines may be rebuilt; and existing utilities often have to be relocated to accommodate the construction. This means that there may be short periods of time when a utility service is interrupted for nearby residents and businesses. These interruptions are minimized to the greatest extent possible and an effort is made to coordinate them with lower use time periods. Anyone who will be affected by a utility disruption will be provided advance notice of the time and nature of the disruption.

Construction Noise and Dust
Construction noise on this project will come primarily from two sources: pile driving for bridges and the operation of trucks and construction equipment. Pile driving occurs at the start of the construction of bridges. There are many different types of pile but the most common are steel pipes or H-beams. These are pounded into the ground with hydraulic, steam or diesel hammers and are needed to hold the bridges up. Pile driving will generally last one to two weeks in any single location.

Construction vehicle noise comes generally from three sources: the movement of the truck (motor and tires), the clanging of truck beds when trucks are unloading, and the sound of back-up bells which are required for safety reasons.

Work in the corridor is restricted to between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Therefore, nighttime noise should not be a concern. There are occasions, particularly during heavy rains, when water must be pumped from a project area. These pumps must operate continuously. Every effort is made to muffle the noise from these pumps.

Construction also generates a considerable amount of dust. ZRC will regularly water down exposed dirt areas to reduce the amount of dust.
