Overview
Highway 55 is an important corridor for connection from the
Twin Cities central areas to the northwestern suburbs. This corridor has become congested as the
area has developed because there are no parallel routes to spread the traffic
demand. The capacity of Highway 55 must
be increased.
Hennepin County and Mn/DOT are partnering on steps toward
reconstructing and adding lanes to the corridor. A corridor design concept and an
Environmental Assessment has been completed. The portion of Highway 55 being studied
extends from just east of I-494 in Plymouth to the Hennepin County border in
Rockford.
Construction on the corridor will not occur until funding
becomes available, likely several years in the future. However, development of a design and
completion of environmental studies now will allow communities to plan
effectively and allow projects to proceed efficiently when funding is secured.
