| US Highway 10 is an important transportation route that
crosses Minnesota, beginning at Moorhead and running southwest across the state to Hastings on the Mississippi River. A primary road in the years
before construction of I-94, US Highway 10 remains an important route for goods
and people, as illustrated by its designation as a Medium Priority
Interregional Corridor in Mn/DOT’s Interregional Corridor System (IRC). The emphasis of the IRC system is to provide
efficient connections between and among regional trade centers, a function
clearly exhibited by US Highway 10.
The portion of US Highway 10 under study is a 6.1-mile
segment where the four-lane highway narrows to two lanes in the vicinity of
Wadena. Specifically, this two-lane segment begins at Bluffton in Otter Tail County and extends eastward to a point 1.5 miles east of the City of Wadena.
The Scoping
Decision Document completed in 2004 identified three bypass
alternatives (all running north of the city) and a through-town alternative
along the existing Highway 10, to be compared to the No-Build Alternative. Preliminary engineering will be carried out
on these alternatives, and potential impacts evaluated in the next planning
document, a Draft Environmental Impact Statement.
