MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

I-494 Reconstruction from I-394 to the Minnesota River

Location:  The proposed project is located in the southwest Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area.  The project includes the reconstruction of Interstate 494 from Interstate 394 to the Minnesota River (18.2 miles). View Map

Description: The I-494 Proposed Build projects will replace pavement and bridges, add at least one lane of capacity in each direction along the corridor (expanding the existing 6 lane highway to an 8 lane+ highway), build in advantages through corridor management, provide continuous bus-only shoulders, improve interchanges, and reserve space in the median for future transportation uses.  The proposed design replaces the existing cloverleaf interchanges at Interstate 35W and Trunk Highway 100 with high capacity semi-directional interchanges.  Local access interchanges are also improved at Penn, Lyndale, and Portland Avenues to single point diamond interchanges.  To help ease congestion along the corridor, transit and freight advantages will be emphasized before, during and after the reconstruction.  The Parallel Arterial Reliever Route System, under development by the adjacent cities, is critical for providing congestion relief along the corridor.
