During the second full week of construction on the Interstate 35W bridge project, the Flatiron-Manson construction team will continue the excavation work they started this week and begin some new activities.
The following work is scheduled for the week of Nov. 5:
-
Crews will continue the excavation work on the south side of the Mississippi River at pier No. 2 . Construction lighting will be used and work will run from 7 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. (two separate shifts), Monday through Saturday.
-
The construction team will begin pile driving on the south side of the river around abutment No. 1 next week. Pile driving, which requires a steel driver to pound a steel pile into the ground, generates significant noise and will only take place from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
-
Crews will begin grading work at abutment No. 5 and No. 3 and drilling at abutment No. 3 on the north side of the river. Diesel-powered loaders and dump tricks will be used for grading, and a diesel-powered drill rig will be used to drill the shaft. Construction lighting will be used at the river level. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. (two separate shifts), Monday through Saturday.
-
Crews will continue to work on the casting yard for the project, which will be located on 35W, between Washington Avenue and the end of the roadway. This will be where the pre-cast sections of the bridge will be made.
In addition to the ground work that has begun, some of the materials needed for the building of the structure-large steel and wood beams called "falsework"-will start to arrive on site next week.
